InformationJUNGLE
At first sight, the Jungle rug seems mainly figurative since one recognises it as a jungle of palm trees, referencing well-known pictorial works such as those of Douanier Rousseau or Paul Gauguin.
In this blended mental image, one might also think of Jean Dubuffet’s trees (in his sculpture, ‘Le Boqueteau à Flaine’) or even his ’L’Hourloupe’ series of drawings composed of cross-hatching and stripes in a reduced palette of 3-4 colours.
Marie-Aurore Stiker-Metral stylises her palm trees in pointillist fashion, colouring them with fresh, mainly pastel shades.
She seems to use a graphic language inspired by the various needle stitching points, a little as if she had ‘embroidered with felt pens’.
Palms and trunks thus melt into a figurative, poetic abstraction, marked by softness and false naïveté. An exercise in innocence, from the jungles of Paradise on the way to perdition, at a time of ecological alerts which raise awareness amongst our society with every passing day?
