InformationRIALTO
Around the 11th century, the important market of Venice and various “Marangoni” or joiner’s shops were moved to the Rialto area on the eastern bank of the Grand Canal.‎ The growing importance of this “marketplace” for social exchange and trading resulted in more traffic over the floating bridge that connected the two banks and some wooden bridges were therefore built.‎ It was only in 1591, however, that today’s Rialto bridge could be admired for the first time - that potent symbol of the union between the lands of Venice as well as symbol of extraordinary beauty.‎
